Claude AI to PDF

How to export Claude AI conversations as PDF — step by step (+ easier way)

Claude by Anthropic is one of the most capable AI assistants, but claude.ai has no built-in export feature. Here is how to save Claude conversations as PDF using browser print — and a one-click method that produces clean, formatted documents without the Claude interface.

Step by step

How to save Claude AI conversations as PDF

Two methods — neither is built into Claude.

Method 1: Browser print (Ctrl+P)

The quickest way to get a Claude conversation into PDF format is to use your browser's built-in print function.

  1. Open your conversation at claude.ai in Chrome, Edge, or another browser.
  2. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) to open the browser print dialog.
  3. Set the Destination to "Save as PDF."
  4. Expand "More settings" and uncheck "Headers and footers" to remove URL and date stamps.
  5. Optionally set "Background graphics" to on if you want to preserve Claude's UI colors in the output.
  6. Click Save and choose a filename.

Warning: This captures the entire Claude interface — the conversation sidebar, model selector dropdown, message input area, and all UI elements — alongside the actual conversation.

Method 2: Copy to Google Docs then export

For more control over the final document, you can copy the conversation content into a document editor.

  1. Open your Claude conversation at claude.ai.
  2. Select the conversation content you want by clicking and dragging. For long conversations, use Ctrl+A to select all visible content.
  3. Copy with Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac).
  4. Open a new Google Doc (or Word document) and paste with Ctrl+V.
  5. Clean up any formatting artifacts — Claude's code blocks and markdown formatting may not paste cleanly.
  6. Export the Google Doc as PDF via File > Download > PDF Document.

Trade-off: This gives you more control over formatting but is manual and time-consuming, especially for long conversations.

Limitations

Common issues when exporting Claude conversations

Claude.ai was not designed with PDF export in mind.

No native export feature

Claude.ai has no built-in export, download, or share feature for conversations. There is no "Save as PDF" button, no export menu, and no way to generate a document from your conversation. Browser print is your only built-in option.

Full UI captured in print

Browser print on claude.ai captures the entire interface — the left sidebar with conversation history, the model selector, the message input box with its attachment buttons, and the Anthropic branding — all alongside your conversation content.

Code blocks get clipped at margins

Claude frequently generates code in its responses. Browser print does not handle wide code blocks well — long lines are clipped at the page margin rather than wrapped, and syntax highlighting may be lost or rendered incorrectly.

Artifacts do not always render

Claude's artifact panel (for code previews, documents, and interactive content) appears in a side panel that may not render correctly in print view. Artifacts may appear collapsed, overlapping, or missing entirely in the printed PDF.

Long conversations produce bloated PDFs

Claude conversations can be very long, with detailed multi-part responses. Browser print produces a PDF with the full UI chrome repeated on every page — sidebar, header, input box — making long conversations produce unnecessarily large files.

The easier way

Export Claude conversations as clean PDFs

No sidebar. No input box. No model selector. Just the conversation.

1

Open the Claude conversation in your browser

Navigate to the conversation you want to save at claude.ai. Make sure the full conversation is loaded — scroll through to verify all messages are visible.

2

Click the Pretty PDF extension icon

The extension extracts just the conversation content — your prompts and Claude's responses — removing the sidebar, model selector, input box, and all interface elements.

3

Choose a template and generate

Pick from five professional templates. The Dark Mode template works especially well for code-heavy conversations. Click Generate PDF for a clean, formatted document.

Frequently asked questions

Claude.ai does not have a built-in export feature. You can use browser print (Ctrl+P) which captures the full interface, or Pretty PDF to extract just the conversation content.
Yes. Pretty PDF's templates handle code blocks with JetBrains Mono font and proper wrapping. Browser print often clips long code lines. The Dark Mode template works especially well for code-heavy conversations.
Claude's artifacts (code previews, documents) appear in a side panel. For best results, open the artifact in its own view before using Pretty PDF, or use Selection Mode to capture specific parts of the conversation.
Yes. Pretty PDF works identically on claude.ai, chat.openai.com, and any other AI chat interface. See our ChatGPT to PDF guide for specific tips.
