Canva to PDF

How to export Canva designs as PDF — step by step (+ easier way)

Canva makes it easy to design presentations, social graphics, and documents — but getting a high-quality PDF out of Canva has some gotchas. Here is how to export your designs properly, including the difference between PDF Standard and PDF Print.

Step by step

How to export Canva designs as PDF

Canva's built-in export with the settings that matter.

Basic export (works on free tier)

  1. Open your design in Canva's editor at canva.com.
  2. Click "Share" in the top-right corner of the editor.
  3. Click "Download" from the dropdown menu.
  4. Under "File type", select "PDF Standard" for screen-quality output or "PDF Print" for high-resolution print output.
  5. Choose your pages — you can export all pages or select specific ones using the page selector.
  6. Click "Download" and wait for the file to generate.

PDF Standard vs PDF Print

Canva offers two PDF formats, and choosing the right one matters:

PDF Standard is optimized for screen viewing — smaller file size, 96 DPI, RGB color space. This is the right choice for documents you will share digitally, embed in emails, or view on screen. It is available on the free tier.

PDF Print is optimized for professional printing — 300 DPI, CMYK color space, with optional crop marks and bleed. This is the right choice for business cards, flyers, posters, and anything going to a commercial printer. PDF Print is a Canva Pro feature ($12.99/month).

Export with crop marks and bleed (Pro only)

  1. In the Download dialog, select "PDF Print" as the file type.
  2. Check "Crop marks and bleed" to add trim lines for professional printing. This adds a 3mm bleed area around each page.
  3. Check "Flatten PDF" if you want all elements merged into a single layer — useful for preventing font issues at the print shop.
  4. Click Download.

Exporting Canva presentations as PDF

For Canva presentations (slide decks), the same export flow applies. Each slide becomes a page in the PDF. If your presentation has animations or transitions, these are not captured in the PDF — only the final state of each slide is exported. For presentations with speaker notes, the notes are not included in the PDF export.

Limitations

Common issues when exporting Canva to PDF

Canva's export is good for designs, but has gaps for web content.

PDF Print requires Canva Pro

High-resolution PDF export (300 DPI) with crop marks and bleed is locked behind Canva Pro at $12.99/month. Free users only get PDF Standard at 96 DPI, which is not suitable for professional printing.

Watermarks on Pro elements

If you use Canva Pro stock photos, illustrations, or premium elements on the free tier, the downloaded PDF includes watermarks on those elements. You need to either remove them or upgrade to Pro to get clean output.

No typography control in PDF

The PDF export uses Canva's own rendering engine. You cannot change fonts, line spacing, or typography settings specifically for the PDF output — what you see in the editor is what you get in the download.

Large designs export slowly

Multi-page designs with many high-resolution images and complex elements can take a long time to export. Very large documents occasionally time out or fail during the PDF generation process.

No PDF export for Canva websites

If you build a website using Canva's website feature, there is no way to export the published site as a PDF from within Canva. The website exists only as a live webpage — you would need an external tool to convert it.

The easier way

Convert Canva pages and websites to PDF with Pretty PDF

For Canva-published websites and presentation views, Pretty PDF fills the gap.

Important note: For exporting Canva designs (flyers, social posts, print materials), Canva's built-in PDF export is the right tool. It renders the design exactly as you created it. Pretty PDF is not a replacement for Canva's design export.

Where Pretty PDF shines is converting Canva-published websites and presentation views to clean PDFs — something Canva does not offer natively.

1

Open the Canva page in your browser

Navigate to the Canva-published website, presentation view, or shared design link in Chrome.

2

Click the Pretty PDF extension icon

The extension extracts the visible content and removes Canva's navigation, sharing controls, and interface elements.

3

Choose a template and generate

Pick from five professional templates with embedded fonts and proper page breaks. Click Generate PDF for a clean document.

Frequently asked questions

In Canva, click Share > Download, select "PDF Standard" or "PDF Print" as the file type, choose your pages, and click Download. PDF Standard is for screen viewing at 96 DPI; PDF Print is for professional printing at 300 DPI with optional crop marks and bleed.
Basic PDF Standard export is free for all Canva users. PDF Print (300 DPI, crop marks, bleed) and removing watermarks from Pro elements requires Canva Pro at $12.99/month. If you only need screen-quality PDFs for digital sharing, the free tier works fine.
Canva websites (published Canva sites) do not have a built-in PDF export option. The website exists only as a live page. You can use Pretty PDF to convert the published site URL into a clean PDF with professional templates — just open the site in Chrome, click the extension, and generate.
If you exported as "PDF Standard," it uses 96 DPI resolution — suitable for screens but noticeably blurry when printed. For print quality, choose "PDF Print" which exports at 300 DPI. Note that PDF Print requires a Canva Pro subscription.
